Non Profit groups Connection Africa and CA4Elephants staged an awareness event as well as an ivory surrender with coordinated support by the California Fish and Wildlife Service at the State Capitol, in Sacramento, California on Friday, August 12, 2016. The event, in addition to raising awareness, was in celebration of the passing of AB96 which was signed into law on October 4, 2015 and went into effect July 1st, 2016 banning the importation and sale of ivory. Officials from California Fish and Wildlife Service were on hand to accept ivory and they kept a table with literature as well as an example of a manmade fake ivory decorative object. Connection Africa and CA4 Elephants work toward educating the public on the plight of elephants as well as other endangered species. The group held the event with live music, a drawing table with crayons and pens where people had the opportunity to write messages on the plight of elephants, literature, and handmade bracelets from the Maasai in Africa.
